A preschool (also nursery school, kindergarten) is an educational establishment offering early childhood education to children between the ages of three and five, prior to the commencement of compulsory education at primary school. They may be privately operated or government run, and the costs may be subsidized.
Preschool education, education during the earliest phases of childhood, beginning in infancy and ending upon entry into primary school at about five, six, or seven years of age (the age varying from country to country).
The institutional arrangements for preschool education vary widely around the world, as do the names applied to the institutions. The terms usually given to centers for the care of infants—those in the first phase of childhood (about three months to three years of age)—are infant school, day care, day nursery, and crèche—. For the second phase of early childhood, other institutional names and arrangements exist, the most common being the “maternal school” or nursery school, and the kindergarten. Typically, the maternal school (for ages three to four or five) precedes kindergarten (for ages four or five to six), but in some countries—a child goes from the maternal directly to the primary school.
A preschool education director generally oversees an entire preschool, ensuring that its day-to-day activities run smoothly and that it meets state and national regulations and standards. Education requirements can vary by institution, but at the minimum, a bachelor's degree in early childhood education is required, and a master's degree is useful. In addition, there are licensing requirements that vary by state.
Preschool teachers spend their days teaching and caring for young children between three and five years of age. Using dramatic play, games, songs and formal instruction, they instruct their young students in basic skills. Preschoolers are taught the alphabet, numbers, colors and social skills. They may learn how to write their own names as well.
